WINGS IN THE MAKING: WHERE BIRDS TAKE FLIGHT / SOMOS ABQ

Wings in the Making: Where Birds Take Flight is a large-scale, temporary public art installation inspired by migratory birds and the Rio Grande's shrinking waters. Inspirational displays of bird kites and images of local migratory and resident birds ground the project in place, ecology, and movement. Inviting festival-goers to help build and decorate bird-shaped kites from wood dowels, fabric, and paint.

 

As the installation unfolds, the growing collection of overlapping kites is suspended within the tent. The accumulation creates an immersive, almost overwhelming visual effect, where individual contributions merge into a unified, living installation—making it difficult to distinguish one bird from the next.
